VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. — A 10-year-old is in the hospital after being hit by an SUV on Thursday morning in Porter Township, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office.
Around 8:10 a.m., deputies responded to the 72000 block of 22nd Street for a report of a pedestrian being hit by a car.
When officials arrived, they immediately started providing medical aid to a 10-year-old who had been hit near a school bus stop.
Deputies said the initial investigation showed that a Mattawan Consolidated Schools bus was headed northbound on 22nd Street, preparing to stop for a student, when the crash happened.
According to deputies, the driver of an SUV, a 38-year-old woman, said she hit the child with her car while the child was crossing the road after checking a family mailbox.
