Waterloo Regional Police will have to spend $5.6 million for more officers at two courthouses that have seen an increase in “aggressive or violent outbursts.”
The police services board was told Wednesday how both the provincial offences court and the Waterloo Region Courthouse need to boost the amount of officers on site after the judiciary had an urgent meeting in September to discuss complaints about lack of security and slow response times to court security issues.
Waterloo Regional Police is in charge of security at the courthouses, as mandated by the province, with one special constable at provincial court, and 36 special constables and two sworn police officers at the regional courthouse.
Currently, that’s not enough, said the force.
