NEW ORLEANS — The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office has identified the teenager killed in a shooting in New Orleans’ Hollygrove neighborhood as 17-year-old Eric C. Simmons III.

Investigators believe Simmons was returning home from school — he was wearing a uniform and carrying a backpack — when several unidentified males approached him in the 8200 block of Stroelitz Street and shot him.

The teen was found with gunshot wounds in the 8600 block of Palmetto Street, and died at the scene.

Detectives have not yet identified any suspects or established a motive. The New Orleans Police Department is urging anyone with information to contact homicide detectives at (504) 658-5300 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
