INDIANAPOLIS — Some AES Indiana customers are getting their electric bill with an extra charge that costs hundreds.
They want to know, 'Why is it there?' and, 'Is it correct?'
Two weeks before Thanksgiving, Sean Hemphill was not anticipating a $470 deposit charge on his AES bill.
"It was a deposit that I had to pay. So, yeah, that was a surprise," Hemphill said.
That is when he noticed a lengthy Facebook post that showed he is not alone.
"I just noticed that a lot of people have been going through the same thing," he explained. "You know, I was kind of happy to see that."
Utility companies can and do assess some customers' deposit charges. The law says it must be based on that person's creditworthiness.
For electric , the amount should not exceed one-sixth of the person's estimated
