OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The family of an Omaha police officer who died in the line of duty more than five decades ago received a special honor flag Friday during a ceremony at the Omaha Public Safety Training Center.

Officer Larry Minard was killed in 1970 when he responded to what officials described as a booby trap emergency call. He was 29 years old and left behind a wife and five children.

“He responded to an emergency call that was literally a booby trap. A bomb goes off and he was instantly killed,” said Jim Meier, director of Honor and Remember Nebraska.

Two Black Panther Party members allegedly lured the officer into the home. Years of controversy followed the case, with many believing they were innocent. They died in prison.
