US President Donald Trump on Friday announced that he was scrapping tariffs on beef, coffee, tropical fruits and a broad swath of other commodities. The move amid mounting pressure on his administration to better combat high consumer prices.
The decision following the victories of Democrats in off-year elections earlier this month. Economic concerns were the top issue for voters in Virginia and New Jersey, signalling a shift in priorities that Trump couldn’t ignore.
The elections served as a reminder of how inflation and rising prices have become a major headache for many Americans, the Associated Press reported.
“We just did a little bit of a rollback on some foods like coffee," Trump said aboard Air Force One as he flew to Florida hours after the tariff announcement was made.
