LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — Rider University has been placed on probation by its accrediting agency as the private institution confronts a deepening financial crisis, the school president has announced.
According to NJ.com, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which accredits colleges across the mid-Atlantic, notified Rider on Oct. 30 that it had been sanctioned. School President John R. Loyack informed the campus this week that the university must move forward with “urgent and severe choices.”
Rider officials announced plans to lay off up to 40 full-time faculty members, reduce salaries by 14%, and suspend all retirement contributions. Additional restructuring measures are expected in the coming months.
