The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) has apologised to a mum caring for her autistic son after it spent five years repeatedly sending her letters in error demanding she pay a £5,000 debt she didn't owe.
Sarah McKenzie says she felt 'suicidal' when the letters first began to appear, and that it has put her under 'immense stress' as she cares for her son, Adam, 23.
Due to a case of mistaken identity, the DWP spent years asking for a payment of £5,444.19 after mixing Ms McKenzie's address with that of another woman with the same name, despite being corrected, the Echo reports.
