The Newbury Fire Department extinguished a fire at Bob Lobster restaurant Saturday that had briefly closed the Plum Island Turnpike to help fire crews get to the blaze.

The department was called to the Plum Island Turnpike eatery with a report of a structure fire around 4 p.m.

Three Bob Lobster employees had evacuated by the time firefighters arrived at the scene.

Mutual aid, including fire fighters from Newburyport, Rowley and Georgetown, supported the Newbury Fire Department while West Newbury, Salisbury, Groveland and Amesbury teams covered Newbury.

The crews were able to quickly knock down the fire, described in the press release as a “small fire in the building’s roof,” but needed additional time for hot spots on the roof and in the walls.
