North Jersey Congressmember Mikie Sherrill is preparing to leave Capitol Hill after winning New Jersey’s gubernatorial election earlier this month.

The mother of four and former Navy helicopter pilot told House colleagues she’ll resign in the coming week.

In a floor speech on Wednesday , she thanked her staff and constituents and urged her fellow lawmakers not to let Congress become what she called a “ceremonial red stamp” for President Donald Trump’s agenda.

“To the country, stand strong,” she said. “As we say in the Navy, don’t give up the ship.”

Sherrill made the remarks during a debate over a government funding bill that later passed and was signed into law.

She is set to become New Jersey’s 57th governor on Jan. 1, succeeding Gov. Phil Murphy. She will be the second woman ever
