The Royal Navy's HMS Prince of Wales has been placed under NATO command, marking a major show of force against Vladimir Putin as Europe bolsters its defences against Russia

The Royal Navy's iconic aircraft carrier, the HMS Prince of Wales, has been placed under NATO control; making alliance history.

The huge 280-metre-long aircraft carrier had been deployed to the Mediterranean for an alliance training programme. It carries 24 British F-35 jets, and was heading to Italy for 'Exercise Falcon Strike'; a large-scale air and maritime NATO exercise.

It marks the first time NATO would have a carrier strike group in its command. That included the HMS Prince of Wales, its support ships, and an advanced fleet of F-35 fighter jets.
