A nine-month-old baby, Jonte William Bluck, tragically lost his life following an attack by an XL Bully dog. The incident occurred on November 2, 2025, at his father's home in Rogiet, South Wales. Jonte was bitten by the family pet inside the property and succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital. An inquest into his death was opened at Gwent Coroner's Court on Monday but has been adjourned until August 4, 2026, as police investigations continue. Area coroner Rose Farmer stated, "Jonte William Bluck sadly passed away on the 2nd of November 2025 at his home address. The brief circumstances are that on the 2nd of November he was staying at the home of his father when he was bitten by the family dog. He was conveyed to the Grange University Hospital but died prior to arrival." The provisional cause of death has been identified as a compressive head injury, consistent with a dog bite. The dog involved in the incident was a six-year-old XL Bully, which had been registered with the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). A certificate of exemption for the dog was issued in 2024. Following the attack, the dog was euthanised. XL Bully dogs have been banned in England and Wales since December 31, 2023, making it illegal to breed, sell, rehome, or abandon them. Gwent Police Assistant Chief Constable Vicki Townsend noted, "While the dog in this case was registered as an XL Bully, it was done so proactively before the ban came into effect. In preparation for the new law, when requesting a certificate of exemption, owners were not required to formally identify the dog's breed." She added, "We understand that there is a significant amount of interest and concern about this incident, and we have seen the community rally together in this difficult time. It is our responsibility as a police service to ensure that the death of a baby boy is fully investigated and so we again urge people to be responsible, and to consider the impact that speculation, rumour and commentary can have on the family and on the integrity of our investigation." The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Jonte's death is ongoing, with authorities urging the public to refrain from speculation as they work to uncover the facts.
