PORTLAND, Ore. — A whale has been stranded near San Marine , south of Waldport on the Oregon Coast, since Saturday night after it reportedly became tangled in fishing line.
Rescue efforts continued into early Monday, with crews using a pulley system to try to free the animal. By 9:15 a.m., rescuers stepped back to let the high tide come in, hoping the whale might free itself.
The young humpback reportedly became entangled in line from a crab pot, according to photos shared on social media.
NOAA Fisheries, the Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network and Oregon State Police have responded to the scene.
"Trying to get a 6,000 pound animal off of the beach is quite an undertaking," said Jane Holbrook of the Oregon Marine Stranding Network.
