Victorian Liberals have appointed their first female leader following a leadership challenge.

Kew MP Jess Wilson has emerged victorious and will replace replace Brad Battin less than a year after he was chosen to head the party.

He faced a partyroom spill on Tuesday morning and was challenged by Wilson, a former staffer to ex-federal treasurer Josh Frydenberg.

Following the leadership change Battin said he was proud of what he had achieved while opposition leader and that the Liberal party now has a “very clear path” towards the next election.

“We need to see genuine change and we can’t just wait for it to happen,” he said.

“In the time I’ve been in this role it’s been an absolute privilege.”
