Firearms can be carried on municipal and state parks under Arkansas law, the state Attorney General's office said, but not in state-owned buildings or facilities.

Assistant Attorney General Justin Hughes told the Game and Fish/State Police Subcommittee of the Arkansas Legislative Council the right to carry a gun applies in 47 state parks as well as municipal parks.

"You are allowed to carry either openly or concealed within the park," Hughes told the committee Monday afternoon.

Hughes' comments expanded on an Attorney General's opinion released Friday that two amendments to state laws allow for the carrying of firearms in parks.
