Coffs Harbour MP Gurmesh Singh was elected unopposed as leader on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after former broadcaster Dugald Saunders' shock resignation for family reasons.

His election came as coalition partner the Liberals held a two-hour partyroom meeting to discuss whether to maintain a net-zero emissions target, amid rumblings Opposition leader Mark Speakman could be deposed.

The next NSW state election is less than 18 months away.
