GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - For the first time since 2009, fans flooded onto the grass at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium after the Pirates’ 31-27 win over Memphis.
That last appearance came when Skip Holtz invited the crowd down after the Conference USA Championship Game. With that being their last conference championship, it’s only fitting that this Saturday’s win came at a critical point in the race to go to this year’s AAC title game.
With the field mobbed, players, coaches & fans celebrated as one, and took down the goalposts as one too.
“I’m excited, smiling, don’t know what to think, having a good time,” ECU Defensive Lineman Preston Carr recalled, “And then I saw the goalposts go down and I’m like ‘oh goodness, they’re gonna take that to the Tar River, [I’ll] see that on the news tomorrow.”
