A Sacramento man is in a coma after what police are investigating as a hate crime. 57-year-old Alvin Prasad was found with life-threatening injuries early Nov. 1. His family says the attack began when a man insulted Prasad’s Halloween outfit before punching him, causing him to fall and suffer severe head trauma. Prasad has been in a coma for two weeks, and his family says doctors warn the brain damage is permanent. Police arrested 24-year-old Sean Payton at the scene on assault, hate-crime, and resisting-arrest charges. The Sacramento LGBT Community Center says it is deeply concerned, citing other recent incidents targeting LGBTQ+ people in the area. Payton is expected back in court next month.
