JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. —

Workers plan to demolish a bridge spanning U.S. 280 in Jefferson County.

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) said crews completed work on the Pumphouse Road bridge ahead of schedule, reopening the highway more than 12 hours early after installing the first three girders for a new bridge.

Crews had shut down a portion of the highway over the weekend to complete the work on the bridge.

Although significant progress has been made, the work is not yet finished.

ALDOT still has two more girders to install and plans to demolish the old bridge.

This work is expected to be completed by October, which means more closures are likely to occur to finish the project.

Updates on future closures will be provided as the project progresses.
