A 59-year-old woman has died following a stabbing incident outside her home in Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, Cork. The attack occurred around 9.30pm on Monday night, leaving her husband, who is in his 60s, seriously injured and currently receiving treatment at Cork University Hospital.
Emergency services were alerted by neighbours who witnessed the violent incident. Paramedics arrived promptly and performed CPR on the injured man before both victims were rushed to hospital. Tragically, the woman succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
A man in his 20s, known to the couple, was arrested at the scene. He is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at a Garda station in Cork. Authorities are assessing his medical fitness for questioning, as reported by the Irish Mirror.
The area has seen a significant Garda presence since the incident, with the scene cordoned off for forensic examination. Neighbours described hearing "terrible screaming" during the attack, which has shocked the normally quiet community.
A Garda statement confirmed the details of the incident, stating, "Gardaí in Cork are investigating a fatal incident in Ballinlough that occurred last night, Monday 17th November 2025. A male in his 60s and a female in her late 50s were brought to Cork University Hospital for treatment of critical injuries, where the female was subsequently pronounced deceased."
The investigation is ongoing, with a Senior Investigating Officer appointed and an incident room established at Anglesea Street Garda Station. The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified, and a post-mortem examination will be conducted in due course. A Family Liaison Officer has also been assigned to support the family of the deceased during this difficult time.
