A man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the manslaughter of 59-year-old John Ithell, who died following a violent altercation. The incident occurred on June 12, 2023, when Ithell, seeking drugs, was confronted by 31-year-old Paul Ince at a flat in Wrexham. Ince, described as acting with "mindless, drunken aggression," punched Ithell in the back garden, causing him to fall backwards into a wooden fence. Witnesses reported that the impact sent Ithell reeling back "four or five feet." Although he managed to walk away initially, he was later discovered by a cyclist lying in a hedge. Paramedics transported Ithell to Wrexham Maelor Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries over four hours later. The court heard that he suffered a fractured skull and a brain bleed as a result of the attack. At Mold Crown Court, a jury cleared Ince of murder but found him guilty of manslaughter. Judge Rhys Rowlands condemned Ince's actions, labelling him "cynical" and "remorseless." He noted that Ithell was significantly older and frailer than Ince, weighing only eight and a half stones. The judge remarked, "He was extremely frail and vulnerable," and highlighted that Ince had shown no remorse throughout the proceedings. Ince had attempted to downplay the incident, claiming it was merely a "push" when interviewed by a probation officer. During the sentencing, the judge stated, "The conduct of the police and prosecution has been pretty impressive from beginning to end," acknowledging the thorough investigation that led to Ince's conviction. Prosecutor Mark Connor emphasised that Ince had deliberately distanced himself from Ithell after the attack, leaving him in a confused and vulnerable state. The jury deliberated for about seven hours before reaching a majority guilty verdict on October 17. Ince, who showed no visible reaction in court, will serve at least two-thirds of his sentence. The judge determined that Ince was not a dangerous offender, opting for a determinant sentence instead.
