The Cambridge Dictionary has confirmed its Word of the Year for 2025 - and it's been inspired by some of the world's biggest names. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's engagement, along with Lily Allen's heartbreaking latest album, have inspired a renaissance in a word coined decades ago - parasocial. ‌

Cambridge Dictionary defines the adjective parasocial as: "Involving or relating to a connection that someone feels between themselves and a famous person they do not know, a character in a book, film, TV series, etc., or an artificial intelligence." ‌

The continued obsession with celebrity culture thanks to social media allowing us deeper access to the lives of the stars, as well as the rise in AI, has played a key role in the word's prominence. ‌
