Twenty years ago, Shane Rolston was volunteering to be the designated driver for his high school peers when he was killed.

He was 17.

Since then, his family and friends have diligently held a vigil in his memory every Nov. 19. Following a fundraiser spearheaded by the Erickson family, who were close friends of the Rolstons, a memorial bench was installed for him at his school, Bev Facey Community High School in Sherwood Park. Every year, people gather there to remember ‘Smiles,’ as he was known.

“He was always smiling,” said his mother Anita Bleackley. “(I wonder) where he would be in his life now? I think he would be married and have his own children.

“A lot of people cared for him and he is well remembered in a lot of people’s hearts.”
