After 240,000 votes over three rounds of balloting, the winner for the new Alberta licence plate design is the one featuring Moraine Lake.

According to Dale Nally, Premier Danielle Smith’s point man on the new licence plate file, the final ballot was one heck of a nail-biter between Moraine Lake and a cowboy and pump jack design.

“The winner is Moraine Lake but it was a horse race. It was back and forth between the two the entire race. I think it was one per cent that separated them,” says Nally.

The new licence plate, expected out by the middle of 2026, sports the provincial motto Strong and Free.

The words strong and free are also in the national anthem.
