With the Rule-5 Draft approaching, the Boston Red Sox are clearing spots on their 40-man roster.

On Tuesday, they designated Nathaniel Lowe to clear a spot for infielder Tristan Gray , who was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Luis Guerrero. The team is also reportedly designating Josh Winckowski for assignment , according to Chris Cotillo.

Lowe was in the final year of arbitration and was set to make a sizeable amount in 2026. MLB Trade Rumors projected his arbitration salary to be $13.5 million, which is a hefty price tag for a first baseman who’s struggled over the past two seasons.

Lowe provided a spark for the Red Sox in August when he signed for the team after being released by the Washington Nationals. He hit .280 and drove in 16 runs over the final two months
