Speed cameras first appeared in Britain in 1992, in south-west London, but have since spread across the country to be a daily fixture in motorists’ lives.

Trafford is no exception, as the borough has 25 speed cameras policing its miles of motorways — including the M60 and M56 — and major A-roads.

More than 250 traffic cameras have been installed in Greater Manchester, and there are hundreds more ‘mobile locations’ where the police can enforce the limits temporarily.
