If you drive into Bolton town centre from Manchester, it’s hard to miss the speed camera looking over you on the A666.

It’s one of thousands of speed cameras in the country, which first appeared on British roads in 1992.

Most drivers know where speed cameras are on their regular routes, including the St Peter’s Way camera. But few will fully understand the reach the cameras have.

More than 250 traffic cameras have been installed in Greater Manchester, and there are hundreds more ‘mobile locations’ where the police can enforce the limits temporarily.

However, despite containing sections of major motorway, Bolton has the third-smallest total of speed cameras in Greater Manchester. It has only 18 of the region’s 262.
