LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - Last week Lufkin High School and Lufkin Middle School were put on lockdown, a day apart from each other. Statements from the district explained that in both cases there was a report of a student having a firearm. Both were found to be false alarms.
“I think it escalated the need for us to be able to put these in schools as quickly as possible,” said Dr. Daniel Spikes, the district’s assistant superintendent of administrative services.
It was these incidents that Spikes said expedited their plans to add weapons detectors in those schools.
“The fact that that happened back-to-back like that. It’s just an uneasy feeling because you worry about when is it not going to be a false alarm,” Spikes said.
Spikes said they have been looking into adding detectors for a while
