The South Australian opposition has pledged a $21-million voluntary fisheries buyback scheme, if it is elected next year, to allow commercial fishers to leave the industry amid the harmful algal bloom.

Liberal leader Vincent Tarzia said some fishers have been lacking confidence and certainty in the sector because the bloom has caused widespread deaths of marine life along the state's coast.

"If people want to get out of the industry, they'll be able to do so," he said.

"That'll be good for fishermen. It'll also be good for the sustainability of the fishing sector.

"Some of these fishermen have been fishing for generations — they have never seen it as bad as this."
