Wyandotte Public Schools' Wilson Middle School is closed on Wednesday due to a potential norovirus outbreak, officials said.

All after-school sports and activities are also cancelled due to the closure, according to a post on the district's Facebook page.

Norovirus is the country’s leading cause of foodborne illness, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

About 1 in 15 people across the U.S. get the virus annually, experts said.

Because the virus is highly contagious, outbreaks are often reported in community settings, such as healthcare facilities, restaurants, schools, childcare centers, and cruise ships, according to the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.
