In a surprising move, the New Orleans Saints are releasing veteran receiver Brandin Cooks, according to a league source.

According to an NFL Media report, the Saints and Cooks mutually agreed upon the decision.

The Saints signed the 32-year-old to a two-year, $13 million contract with $7.75 million guaranteed this offseason . In Cooks, the Saints were hoping to get not only a contributing player, but someone who could provide mentorship to the young players at the position.

While his teammates have heralded Cooks for his leadership throughout his time on the team this season, his production has not materialized. In 10 games, Cooks caught 19 passes for 165 yards despite playing 65 % of the team's offensive snaps.
