Former federal cabinet minister Steven Fletcher is accusing WestJet of imposing an “invented” 300-pound weight limit on power wheelchairs that he says amounts to systemic discrimination against people with disabilities, as the airline declines to answer specific questions about the policy.
Fletcher, a former MP and former minister of state for transport, has filed complaints with both the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) and the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) after WestJet refused to transport his power wheelchair earlier this year. He says the airline transported the same model of chair on the same type of aircraft for decades without issue before declaring it too heavy.
