A jury found a former Youth Development Center worker accused of raping a 16-year-old in the 1990s not guilty on three counts of aggravated sexual assault, but failed to reach unanimous verdicts on five other charges of abuse.
The verdicts came after two and half days of deliberations for the jury of eight women and four men.
Stephen Murphy, 56, of Danvers, Mass., embraced about 20 or so family members and friends inside the courtroom after the jury foreman read the verdicts.
“Six years I’ve waited for this,” Murphy told the group.
The acquittals on the three charges were seen as a victory with Murphy fist pumping and pointing to the sky with both hands in the air.
