Medical providers, parents and advocates for people with disabilities spoke out against state legislation to mandate a work requirement for Medicaid that would go further than the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that Congress passed this summer.
Starting in 2027, the federal law requires all states that provide expanded Medicaid access to able-bodied low-income adults to require participants ages 19 to 64 to prove they work or volunteer at least 80 hours a month.
The federal law says these clients must show proof of that work every six months, but an amended bill (SB 134) that cleared the House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs Committee last week would require clients to show that proof every three months.
