WACO, Texas — The Texas Department of Agriculture is warning horse owners of an outbreak of an equine virus that could possibly be linked to an event in Waco.

Commissioner Sid Miller has issued an alert about an outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 (EHV-1) that has been reported by Texas veterinarians after the World Championship Barrel Racing (WPRA) Finals in Waco on Nov. 5-9.

Miller has advised all horse owners, trainers and venue operators who attended or were "in proximity" to the event, or who have attended other large equine events in the Waco area in the last two weeks to monitor their animals and "implement heightened biosecurity measures."

Miller says EHV-1 can spread fast and can be deadly, with early signs being easy to miss.
