WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Sedgwick County is considering a possible sales tax to help pay for upkeep at Intrust Bank Arena as the venue’s reserve fund approaches depletion.

Over the last 15 years, the arena reserve fund has been used to keep up with the building and now sits just below $800,000. With funding expected to be wiped out next year, commissioners are looking for solutions before the funding goes dry in 2027.

Proposed quarter-percent sales tax

One proposal is a quarter-percent sales tax to fund all of the county’s recreational or cultural programs, like Intrust Bank Arena and the Sedgwick County Zoo.

Currently, it takes around $35 million to fund those programs, most of which is covered by property taxes.
