GREENWOOD COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Ninety Six National Historic Site in Greenwood County hosted an event to commemorate one of the first land battles in the South during the American Revolution.

The battle occurred on Nov. 19, 1775, when Loyalists attacked a makeshift stockade after Patriots had raided Loyalist strongholds and gathered gunpowder and supplies.

“Patriots had gone and raided loyalist strongholds and other things and gathered gunpowder and some other very important things,” said retired Major General Will Grimsley, SC250 Chairman. “And the British and the Loyalists knew about it, and they came to reclaim it, and so it was a big fight.”
