VANDERBURGH CO., Ind. (WFIE) - Vanderburgh County Prosecuter Diana Moers says if a juvenile acts like an adult and commits violent crimes, they will try them as adults in an effort to keep the community safe.
She says her office files about 400 juvenile cases a year and about 300 of those cases are violent enough that they could be charged as adults.
“Now in some sense, I think this has always been happening. But with the crime gun intelligence center that my office has spearheaded, we’re noticing and catching more of these violent offenders with guns and so you’re seeing that with waivers to adult court,” Moers said.
Some of those include 15-year-old Maurice Hayward Jr, charged as an adult in connection to the shooting of Evansville Police Officer Sam Taylor and 16-year-old Isam Clark,
