The former Central YMCA Headquarters at 19 S. LaSalle St. in Chicago's Loop may soon become an official city landmark, following a proposal introduced to the City Council by Mayor Brandon Johnson.

Built in 1893, the building served as the headquarters for the YMCA’s Chicago branch until the 1970s. It was originally constructed with 12 stories, and in 1913 underwent renovations that added Classical Revival architectural features. The structure is notable as one of only two remaining buildings in the Loop designed by William Le Baron Jenney, who is often called "the father of the skyscraper."

If approved, landmark status would protect the building’s exterior elevations. This move coincides with plans for a $64 million project to convert its interior from office space to residential units,
