Who doesn’t love a good homecoming? Whether it’s reuniting with classmates or visiting family, this season invites us to step out of routine and reconnect.

I had that experience last week in Bay City. I was invited to speak at the Eye-Opener Breakfast of the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce – a large group of businesspeople who summon an impressive amount of energy for 7:15 in the morning.

But they were more than an audience. They’re part of my story.

I’ve lived my whole life in Michigan, though I’ve moved often. The 18 years I spent in Bay City – working at The Bay City Times in roles that eventually included editor – was the longest stretch I’ve ever stayed in one place.

I made lifelong friends. Played in the local softball league. Joined civic organizations. And in a twist of serendip
