Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill officially announced her resignation from Congress.
Sherrill, who represents New Jersey's 11th Congressional istrict, sent a resignation letter to Gov. Phil Murphy this week. Her resignation will take effect Thursday, Nov. 20 at 11:59 p.m.
"It has been an honor to serve the residents of the 11th Congressional District since 2019. I’ve been proud to fight for our communities, getting shovels in the ground for the Gateway Tunnel project, slashing through red tape on critical flood mitigation projects, protecting Picatinny Arsenal’s mission, and funding community projects that support our students, infrastructure, and public safety," Sherill, a Democrat, wrote in her letter.
Sherrill was elected as New Jersey's next governor earlier this month, easily defeating Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli, 57% to 43%. She has served in Congress since 2019.
Once Sherrill officially leaves office, Gov. Phil Murphy will call a special election to fill the vacant seat.
A primary election between January 30 and February 5, followed by a special election between April 4 and April 16, ABC 7 reported.
Candidates include former Rep. Tom Malinowski, Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill and Lt. Gov. Tahesa Way.
Murphy has already endorsed Gill, his former campaign manager.
Any Democrat would be favored to win election in the blue district, which features portions of Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties. In 2024, Kamala Harris defeated Donald Trump by 8 points, while Sherrill won re-election by 15 points.
