At the end of Train Dreams, director Clint Bentley’s achingly sad elegy for the American West, early 20th century logger-turned-lost soul Robert Grainier (Joel Edgerton) is told by the pilot of a small plane, “You better hold onto something.” These words, some of the last we hear in the film, are less a safety warning then a reminder that as the world gets bigger and more impersonal, our ineffable bond with nature and family will always bring us comfort.
