A Maryland family lost their home and four pets after an accidental electrical fire tore through a Federalsburg house on Wednesday, according to the Maryland Fire Marshal.

The fire broke out around 2:40 p.m. on Nov. 19, at a one-story, wood-frame home on Webster Street in Dorchester County.

Officials said one of the residents was home when smoke alarms went off and they had to escape through a bedroom window.

No injuries were reported, but three dogs and one cat died in the fire.

Hurlock Volunteer Fire Department responded with 45 firefighters.

Crews brought the flames under control in 15 minutes. Investigators said the fire started in the kitchen and was ruled accidental due to an electrical failure.

Damage is estimated at $200,000 to the structure and $100,000 to the contents. Officials said two people are displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
