It has been more than three months since North Dakota increased the speed limit on its interstate highways to 80 mph.
In that time, the number of speeding tickets handed out in the new 80 mph zones has decreased, with 2,690 issued from August through October, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol . A total of 3,557 were issued during the same three months in 2024, when the speed limit was 75 mph.
There have been fewer crashes in the 80 mph zones too: 198 in those same three months, down from 212 last year.
The speed limit didn't increase everywhere – it was lowered to 70 mph around Dickinson, Grand Forks, Jamestown, Medora and Valley City. In those areas, speeding tickets have increased, with 325 issued from August through October, compared to 273 a year before.
