The last time an inmate at a Virginia prison fatally attacked a correctional officer was in March of 1975, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections and the union that represents correctional officers.

That benchmark was erased Monday when the Virginia Department of Corrections announced the death of 40-year-old Jeremy Lewis Hall after an inmate attacked him at River North Correctional Center.

On Tuesday afternoon, the agency announced new details in Hall’s death. The attack, they said, was conducted by John Holomon Russell, who was serving a nearly 12-year sentence. Russell had been convicted of carjacking — a news story from 2017 reported that Russell attempted to carjack a 36-year-old woman from her Nissan.
