OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — A 23-year-old Grand Rapids man faced an Ottawa County judge Thursday and now faces charges in connection with a home invasion earlier this week.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said Jason Varnado was arraigned on home invasion, killing/torturing an animal and felonious assault charges.

The judge set his bond at $250,000. He remains in custody at the Ottawa County Jail.

The 68-year-old homeowner told 13 ON YOUR SIDE that a man came to the back entrance of his house in Olive Township on Tuesday, and he likely came from the woods.

The homeowner, named Paul, said the man asked him for a bottle of water. Paul said he closed the door on the man, but the man forced his way in.
