KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A new partnership between Heart of West Michigan United Way and Instacart is hoping to ease the burden on families receiving food assistance through a new grocery delivery program.

Families in Kent County who use the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are eligible to to receive up to four waived-fee orders per month for 18 months.

The program was launched Thursday to help families have access to fresh, healthy food regardless of where they live or their ability to get to a store.

A study from the University of Kentucky and No Kid Hungry found that SNAP recipients shopping online paid $5 more per week on fruits and vegetables than those shopping in-store. This partnership between United Way and Instacart is hoping to address this.
