Motorists travelling along the Golden Highway through the Upper Hunter could soon enjoy a smoother ride, via a new improvement proposal.

In a bid to make the popular Merriwa stretch safer and more reliable, the NSW Government plans to invest $23.7 million for a significant upgrade.

The state aims to install a westbound overtaking lane about 12km west of Merriwa along the main thoroughfare.

The project is set to not only improve safety, but support freight efficiency and give motorists a “more predictable journey” as well.

The $23.7 million commitment includes $12 million announced during the 2023 stage election campaign and a further $11.7 million allocated in the 2025-26 NSW Budget.
