DES MOINES, Iowa —

A Polk County man is charged with arson after police say he set multiple fires around an apartment complex.

Court documents say this happened Tuesday night on Indianola Avenue. Investigators say someone heard Richard Thompson, 36, of Des Moines, arguing with another person, and that he said he would set his apartment on fire. The witness says she later saw smoke coming from Thompson's apartment.

Documents say he also started a fire in the grass on the complex, and in a detached garage.

Thompson was booked into the Polk County Jail.
