FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Bus drivers are known for getting students safely to and from school, but last week, drivers and staff at Deer Ridge Elementary School came together to support one of their own.

Before the sun rises, SACS bus drivers like Akimu Salawou begin their routes, quietly shaping the days of hundreds of students.

“A kid on the bus that road my bus name and put bus 55 on it, and he said, “thank you so much for taking me to school and to the YMCA”, it was the most beautiful thing.” Akimu Salawou.

But behind the wheel, drivers carry more than just responsibility. They carry the weight of their own lives, too.

Salawou was born in Africa. He has been in America for 32 years and has two children of his own.
